Samsung making more than $100 million available to owners of certain 2011-2016 Samsung top-loading washers with a range of benefits including rebates, refunds, and repairs

March 18, 2019, New York—(BUSINESSWIRE)—The law firm of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, announces that a settlement (washermdlsettlement.com) has been reached with defendant Samsung Electronics and retailer defendants including Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe’s over certain 2011-2016 models of Samsung top-loading washing machines whose tops consumers alleged could detach during operation and whose drain pumps could break or detach during operation. Consumers contended that the washing machines, whose operations caused some of the devices to explode in owners’ homes, are defective; Samsung and the defendants deny all of the allegations of the lawsuit, including those relating to defects in the washers.

“This is a great victory for owners of the Samsung top-loading washers,” notes Jason Lichtman, a partner at Lieff Cabraser and co-lead attorney for the plaintiffs in the suit. “There was a real problem here, and Samsung is now making things right.”

The settlement class includes every resident of the United States and its territories who was the original purchaser of a new Top-Load Washer for household use. Affected owners can qualify for benefits under the settlement that include rebates, refunds, or reimbursement of certain expenses, costs, and repairs. The Top-Load Washers included in the Settlement were the subject of a voluntary recall initiated by Samsung on November 4, 2016.

Additional information about the settlement, including answers to frequently asked questions, a list of included washers, and instructions for filing claims, are available on the settlement website, washermdlsettlement.com. Claim forms must be submitted by August 6, 2019, and owners who wish to exclude themselves from or object to the settlement must do so by June 7, 2019. A Fairness Hearing will be held by the Court on October 7, 2019 to determine whether to grant final approval to the Settlement.
