Analog Signal Devices Investigation
Many companies sell devices which rely at least in part on analog signals. In February 2008 the analog signals that these analog devices rely upon to operate will no longer be available.
The national law firm of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, is currently investigating consumer protection claims concerning the imminent failure of products relying on analog signals.
Several companies have been aware since 2002 of the systemic changes that will make the analog systems obsolete or less effective by February 2008. Yet some of these same companies may have failed to disclose this critical information to consumers purchasing analog-based equipment. For example, some cell phone companies have continued to market "dual mode" phones using analog and digital signals as offering superior coverage without disclosing the expected drop in coverage in 2008.
The analog signal loss will reportedly affect:
- Users of home and business security systems with cellular signal backup;
- Purchasers of fleet management systems;
- Purchasers of campus and highway emergency call boxes;
- Purchasers of "dual mode" analog digital cell phones;
- Purchasers of "panic button" alert systems.

Consumer Legal Rights
State and federal laws provide consumers with remedies for products that were defectively designed or manufactured or do not perform as advertised. This is true in many cases even after the warranty period has expired. The cost for a consumer to hire an attorney and file an individual lawsuit against the manufacturer of the defective product is often prohibitive.
The law, however, does not leave the consumer powerless. A small number of consumers may file a class action lawsuit, representing all consumers that purchased the defective product. A class action suit can provide a powerful and effective means for consumers to compel a corporation to acknowledge its legal responsibilities and provide just compensation to the class members.
