An Experienced Advocate For Competition

The Chair of Lieff Cabraser’s Antitrust and Intellectual Property practice group, Joe assists corporate executives, public officials, business owners, and their counsel, harmed by anti-competitive conduct to determine whether and how to pursue litigation to achieve their goals.

Joe possesses over twenty years of experience in antitrust and other complex civil and class action litigation as well as knowledge of a broad range of industries including banking and financial services, computers and consumer electronics, manufacturing inputs, agricultural products, and pharmaceuticals.

In 2011, Joe was one of the lead trial attorneys on the trial of monopolization claims against Abbott Laboratories involving the AIDs drug Norvir which produced a $52 million settlement.  Joe was also a member of the trial team in the federal brand-name prescription drugs price-fixing litigation brought against the pharmaceutical industry and played a leadership role in the California litigation.

He currently serves as Lead Counsel in a number of nationwide antitrust cases. Joe is also one of the lawyers principally responsible for prosecuting the TFT-LCD litigation, and helped craft the landmark settlement and injunction against De Beers for monopolizing the rough diamond trade. As featured in the 2008 Plaintiffs Hot List, The National Law Journal wrote about the team as being

“Among the plaintiffs’ firms that weren’t afraid to take on one of the business world’s great white whales.”

Since 2010, Joe has served as a Lawyer's Representative for the Northern District of California. For a three-year term, Joe also currently serves on the committee appointed by the Court to address proposals for adoption of a summary jury trial procedure in the Northern District.  

LinkedInJoe is one of the editors of California State Antitrust and Unfair Competition Law, published by the State Bar of California's Antitrust and Unfair Competition Section, and a contributor to the California Class Action treatise. He is also a frequent lecturer and panelist on antitrust and complex litigation matters including electronic discovery. For the past five years Super Lawyers has recognized Joe as a Northern California Super Lawyer.
