Vehicle Fires
- Issue: Faulty manufacturing
Vehicle Gas Tank | Fuel Tank Fires and Explosions
Manufacturers owe a duty to consumers to produce safe vehicles and, in particular, ensure that the fuel tank is not punctured or so damaged during an accident that it explodes. Cars, SUVs and pickup trucks with fuel systems vulnerable to exploding in an accident have resulted in severe burns and deaths for drivers and occupants.
For example, General Motors pickup trucks produced from 1973 to 1987 were equipped with fuel tanks mounted outside of the vehicle frame, called side-saddle or saddlebag fuel tanks. In numerous lawsuits against GM, it has been alleged that the GM trucks were defectively manufactured because the fuel tanks have a dangerous tendency to catch fire or explode during a side collision.
Gas Tank Explosion and Accident Lawsuits
Injured drivers and passengers, and the families of loved ones who have died in car, SUV, pickup truck and other vehicle accidents may bring claims against the manufacturers for producing a vehicle with an unreasonable risk of catching fire in an accident or collision.
Damages sought can include:
- Past and future physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment;
- Past and future medical, incidental and hospital expenses;
- Past and future loss of earnings and earning capacity; and
- Punitive damages.
In cases of a fatality, the surviving family members may bring a wrongful death action.
