Anencephaly Possibly Linked to Contaminated Water in Washington State

Infants are being born in Washington State with the birth defect anencephaly at a significantly higher rate than what is considered usual. Anencephaly, a type of neuro tube defect, is a condition in which a child is born without a portion of the brain and/or skull. This birth defect is almost always fatal. A 2013 report by the Center for Disease Control found instances of anencephaly in Yakima County to be four times higher than expected between 2010 and 2013.

Contaminated ground water has been a public health concern in Yakima County for several years. In 2010, the EPA found that as many as 1,800 private wells may contain nitrate levels higher than their standard of 10 parts per million. This discovery prompted a nitrate treatment pilot program to help limit exposure and educate households in high risk areas of lower Yakima County.

According to the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program, "Women whose drinking water contained nitrate levels below the MCL [maximum contaminant level] had a higher risk for anencephaly, but only when the source was groundwater."

If your child was born with anencephaly that you believe was linked to nitrate contaminated water, please contact us by clicking here or call Attorney Fabrice Vincent at 800 541-7358. We will review your claim for free and without any obligation on your part.
