Medtronic Heart Lead Recall

The Medtronic Recall

On October 15, 2007, Medtronic, Inc. withdrew its Sprint Fidelis brand of heart defibrillator leads from the market. Medtronic stated that the Sprint Fidelis leads were prone to cracking, with potentially life-threatening consequences.

Medtronic Lawsuits

Manufacturers of medical devices have a duty to patients to produce safe products. In personal injury lawsuits against Medtronic prepared by Lieff Cabraser, our clients allege that Medtronic misrepresented the safety of the Sprint Fidelis lead. Patients represented by Lieff Cabraser filed the first heart lead recall lawsuits in the nation against Medtronic.

Hundreds of injuries linked to Sprint Fidelis heart defibrillator wires had been reported as of the end of 2006. Medtronic received an additional 374 injury reports by June 2007. The high and early failure rate of Medtronic Sprint Fidelis leads was also reported in a medical journal in 2006. Yet, Medtronic failed to issue a recall and instead continued to sell the devices until October 2007.
