First Yaz Birth Control Injury Trial in State Court Scheduled to Commence in January 2012

35 year old Woman Nearly Died From Blood Clot Allegedly Caused By Yaz

September 16, 2011

Wendy R. Fleishman of the national plaintiffs' law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP announced today that the first lawsuit proceeding in state court against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., is being set for trial. The Honorable Sandra Mazer Moss is hearing pre-trial issues on Monday. The young woman alleges that she suffered severe and lasting injuries caused by Bayer's birth control drug YAZ.

“Bayer will have to answer allegations that its blockbuster birth control drug Yaz caused a thirty-five year old woman’s severe and near fatal pulmonary emboli, cardiopulmonary arrest, and horrible blood clots in her legs,” stated Fleishman.

The case is entitledPetrina Moore v. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and was filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Moore’s complaint charges that Yaz is a dangerous prescription drug sold without adequate warnings about the higher risk of serious injuries over safer, other birth control pills.

"The FDA's adverse event database for Yaz reveals a very high number of serious adverse events associated with these drugs, including strokes, heart attacks, blood clots , and deaths in young women," added Fleishman. “Bayer failed to warn patients and doctors, we allege, that Yaz poses a greater risk of serious injuries than earlier generation birth control pills."
