Halting Bone-Building Osteoporosis Drug Use Significantly Reduces Likelihood Of Additional Fractures

February 8, 2012

In February 8, 2012 press release, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stated that, "There is growing evidence that supports an association between atypical fractures of the femur... and the use of bisphosphonates, drugs proven to enhance bone density and reduce fracture incidence caused by osteoporosis."  It is thought that these types of drugs may undermine the body's bone remodeling abilities leaving patients more vulnerable to future breaks.

The academy noted that a recent study found that, "The incidence of a subsequent atypical femur fracture occurring in the other thigh was 53.9 percent in patients who continued bisphosphonates for three or more years after their first fracture, compared to 19.3 percent in patients who discontinued bisphosphonate use."
