          A $64 million state settlement with Microsoft over antitrust charges gives residents a chance at $5 to $10 rebates on the purchase of new products, authorities said.
          Under the terms of the settlement, which received a Davidson County judge's final approval Monday, buyers of Microsoft operating systems or software products from Dec. 21, 1995, through Dec. 31, 2002, are eligible to receive vouchers toward the purchase of new hardware and software.
          A purchaser of a Windows 98 or other operating system is eligible for a $10 voucher. Buyers of Microsoft Office or other software applications get $5 vouchers, the court said. The vouchers can be claimed through early 2005, and are good for Microsoft and non-Microsoft products.
          In 1999, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of all Tennessee residents alleging that Microsoft used its monopoly power to overcharge customers. Microsoft has set aside $64 million for the settlement, and agreed to give the state Commissioner of Education vouchers worth half of whatever goes unclaimed by consumers. Tennessee is the 10th state where Microsoft has settled class-action lawsuits accusing it of anticompetitive business practices.
