Bloomberg News, "Wyeth in Settlement Talks Over Diet Drugs"
Wyeth, which set aside $16.6 billion to resolve diet-drug lawsuits, said yesterday that it was in settlement talks with lawyers for people who have rejected its attempts to resolve remaining claims over heart damage caused by the fen-phen diet combination. Wyeth, based in Madison, N.J., is negotiating with lawyers for some of the 60,000 former fen-phen users who opted out of the company's $3.75 billion national settlement, Wyeth officials said yesterday. Wyeth pulled the diet drugs Pondimin and Redux off the market in 1997 after researchers linked them to heart and lung problems in some users.
