San Jose Business Journal, "CSC to pay $24M to settle landmark overtime suit"

         Computer Sciences Corp. agreed to put $24 million into a fund to pay some 30,000 current and former employees overtime they were denied. It's one of the largest overtime pay dispute settlements ever in the IT industry. The suit, filed in November 2003 in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleged that the workers had not received time-and-a-half pay for work in excess of 40 hours a week. Unlike other overtime class actions brought on behalf of fast food workers making the minimum wage, the CSC employees were paid well above the burger-flipping world. Some made $50,000 or more a year installing and maintaining software and equipment.
         What the workers did for CSC was seen by lawyers watching the case as pivotal. Federal law exempts IT companies from paying overtime to certain software writers and other professionals as long as they're paid at least $27.63 an hour and are working mainly on software development or other independent, creative work.
