Citigroup Inc. will pay $33 million to settle a lawsuit filed by three female brokers in Santa Rosa who charged its Smith Barney unit denied equal opportunities for women.

The average payout would be $13,200 if shared equally, but many will receive much more based on seniority, and some may opt out or not seek payment, said Kelly Dermody, lead attorney for the women. The three Santa Rosa women each will receive $50,000 in addition to their payout, Dermody said.

"It's always important to ensure that people who have worked in the company receive reimbursement for things they believe they lost. But what is most important and what provides the longest serious economic benefit is true structural change," she said.
