Magnetix Toy Recall and Injuries to Children from Swallowing Magnets
Magtastik and Magnetix Pre-School Magnetic Toys are animal, vehicle or building toys embedded with magnets that allow the parts to connect to large, colored metal balls. The embedded magnets can detach, especially over time. When more than one magnet is swallowed or aspirated by a young child, the powerful magnets attract to one another, causing intestinal perforations and blockages, which can be fatal.
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission November 2011 Safety Alert
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has released a strong warning for parents to be watchful of children's toys containing small magnets that may come loose and fall out. In 2011, the CPSC has conducted five recalls of more than eight million products containing small, powerful magnets that can come out of the product and be swallowed by children. To date, the CPSC is aware of at least 33 cases where children have swallowed loose magnets and have undergone emergency surgery to remove the magnets.
The CPSC recommends that if you suspect your child has swallowed a magnet to seek immediate medical attention. Common symptoms of magnets in the intestines include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
Millions of Defective Magnet Toys Remain on the Market
In 2007, the CPSC sponsored a forum on magnet ingestion, during which it was determined that magnet ingestion is likely to be a growing problem since age-weakened plastic causes the magnets to loosen more easily.

While the CPSC does not release specific data pertaining to recall response rates, Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the CPSC, stated that millions of defective sets have not been turned in, and therefore remain in the hands of children.

Government Fines Mega Brands
In 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Mega Brands America Inc., of Livingston, N.J., formerly Rose Art Industries Inc., will pay a $1.1 million civil penalty to settle allegations that Mega Brands America and Rose Art failed to provide the government with information about dangers to children with Magnetix magnetic building sets, in a timely manner, as required under federal law. The company's magnetic toys have been recalled three times over the course of several years.
