On December 16, 2014, the Anti-Defamation League recognized Lieff Cabraser partner Kelly M. Dermody with its Distinguished Jurisprudence Award at a gala luncheon in San Francisco. The award celebrated Dermody’s leadership and dedication to serving the public interest, improving access to justice, and ensuring that the rights of historically disenfranchised persons are protected. Takata Airbag Recall FAQ
Numerous automakers have been recalling millions of vehicles this year, mostly manufactured prior to 2009, as a result of the defective airbags made by Japanese supplier Takata Corporation. In November 2014, federal safety regulators expanded the Takata airbag recall, requesting all automakers to conduct a national recall of affected vehicles.

Airbag Recall Update: Takata Allegedly Knew 10 Years Ago of Deadly Airbag Defect
In a shocking development, former workers at airbag manufacturer Takata Corporation reportedly tested airbags at its crash-testing facility in Michigan, which showed a dangerous flaw in the airbags. The secret tests, which have not been previously disclosed, were performed after normal work hours and on weekends and holidays during summer 2004 at Takata’s American headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the former employees stated to the New York Times.

Consecutive Lieff Cabraser Victories in Florida Tobacco Trials
In the last two months, two separate juries in federal court in Florida have awarded plaintiffs represented by Lieff Cabraser a total of $68 million in compensatory and punitive damages against major tobacco companies. The lawsuits charged that the tobacco companies engaged in a 50-year conspiracy to mislead the public about the hazards of smoking.
Stryker Hip Replacement Recall Settlement Summarized
On November 3, 2014, a settlement was announced in the litigation against Stryker Corporation for the recall of its Rejuvenate and ABG II artificial hip implants. Under the settlement, Stryker will provide a base payment of $300,000 to patients that received the Rejuvenate or ABG II hip systems and underwent revision surgery by November 3, 2014, to remove and replace the devices.

Air Bags Ejecting Metal Fragments Cause Fatal Injuries for Drivers and Passengers
Automakers are recalling millions of vehicles due to allegedly defective air bags which shoot out metal shards when they activate, severely injuring drivers and passengers. The alleged faulty air bags are manufactured by Japanese supplier Takata Corp., whose stock shares The New York Times reports have dropped 23 percent in the Tokyo exchange as a result of this widespread air bag issue.
