The Public Education Committee works on initiatives promoting knowledge of America’s civil justice system and trial bar mission. The Public Affairs Committee gives advice on policy options, tactics, and strategies with regard to trial lawyer matters.

Rachel Geman Comments on New Motor Vehicle Safety Whistleblower Act

Earlier this year, the U.S. Senate approved and sent to the House of Representatives the Thune-Nelson Motor Vehicle Safety Whistleblower Act. The bill offers individuals a substantial monetary incentive for whistleblowers in the automotive industry to report safety problems and vehicle defects that could lead to serious injuries or death. Whistleblowers could receive up to 30 percent of any monetary penalty over $1 million imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation or U.S. Department of Justice for misconduct.

Anne Shaver on Recent Supreme Court Title VII Decision

On June 1, 2015, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in its suit against Abercrombie & Fitch alleging religious discrimination under Title VII. The Court held that, to prove disparate treatment, a plaintiff need only to show that the plaintiff’s need for religious accommodation was a motivating factor in the employment decision, not that the employer had actual knowledge of the need for accommodation.
