We have a big problem in the United States. In spite of women making up more than half of the U.S. population, less than a third hold positions in elected offices. On Wednesday, November 16, 2016, Emerge America invites you to join the organization’s annual conference and luncheon entitled “Ambition to Action: Celebrating a Historic Year for Women in Politics” in San Francisco, California at the Merchants Exchange Building.
Emerge America is a non-profit organization that provides a training program for Democratic women who wish to run for public office. The in-depth program consists of 70 hours of training across 7 months and 16 states. Engage America’s mission is to inspire and give female candidates the opportunity to run for elected office and law enforcement positions, with the chance to elevate themselves in our nation’s male-dominated political system.
The number of women in the U.S. who work in their national legislatures falls behind Mexico, China and Pakistan – our nation currently ranks 97th in the world. As reported by Emerge, there have been only 37 women among 27 states who have served as governors in America. Women make up just 19.4% of the U.S. Congress and 24.4% of state legislatures. Out of all 50 states in America, 19 states have no women representing them in Congress and 11 states have no female Senators.
Emerge America has a vision to change this status quo. With around 500,000 political offices in the nation that are filled every year, at least 140,000 women are needed in office to reach gender parity in the political realm. We need you, and we need you now.
