Over a dozen automakers, including Tesla, BMW and Nissan, have recalled 652,000 more vehicles containing the faulty Takata airbag inflators, which can explode upon impact in an accident and dangerously shoot out metal debris from the casing towards drivers and passengers. This recall is expected to start in February. The newly added vehicles join 6 million already recalled in the U.S., and 34 million more worldwide.
The Takata airbag defect has been linked to at least 11 deaths and more than 100 injuries; the related recall is the largest automotive recall in U.S. history. The Takata lawsuit complaints charge that the Japan-based company knew of defects in its airbags a decade ago, after conducting secret tests of the products that showed dangerous flaws. Rather than alert federal safety regulators to these risks, the airbag manufacturer ordered its engineers to delete the test data.
In May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) expanded the recall to cover about 40 million of the air bag parts, and noted “that the agency and an outside expert reviewed the findings of three independent probes into the Takata air bag ruptures to determine their cause – a combination of time, environmental moisture and varying high temperatures that leads to the propellant degrading in the inflators,” as reported by Law360.
The affected Takata parts will be replaced with different airbag inflators free of charge by all vehicle manufacturers.
