Evan J. Ballan is an associate in Lieff Cabraser’s San Francisco office. Before joining our firm, Evan clerked for the Honorable Albert Diaz of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Sean A. Petterson

Sean A. Petterson is an associate in Lieff Cabraser’s New York office.  He is a member of the firm’s securities and consumer practice groups where he has represented shareholders and consumers in a number of high-profile actions. These include representing shareholders in a derivative lawsuit against Wells Fargo that settled for $240 million and corporate governance reforms, and ongoing data breach and TCPA class actions on behalf of consumers.

Prior to joining Lieff Cabraser, Sean was an associate at Boies Schiller Flexner, LLP from 2015-2018, where he also spent the summer of 2014 as a summer associate. Previously, while in law school at NYU, he was a civil litigation extern in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and participated in a clinic with the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Sean graduated from New York University School of Law with a Juris Doctor, where he was a Robert McKay scholar and a Senior Quorum Editor for the Journal of Legislation and Public Policy. Sean also graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University with a B.A. in both History and American Studies.

Mike Sheen

Mike Sheen is an associate in Lieff Cabraser’s San Francisco office. Before coming to Lieff Cabraser, Mike worked as a Judicial Clerk to Judge Dale A. Drozd of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California and as an associate at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP in Los Angeles.

Katherine McBride

Katherine McBride is an associate in Lieff Cabraser’s New York office.

Prior to joining Lieff Cabraser, Katherine was a Law Clerk to the Honorable I. Leo Glasser of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Katherine earned her law degree from Stanford Law School. While there, she was a Levin Center Public Interest Fellow and participant in the Stanford Immigrants’ Rights Clinic, the Iraqi Legal Education Initiative, and the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project. Following graduation, she received a Ford Foundation Public Interest Fellowship to work with Human Rights First in New York.

Avery S. Halfon

Avery Halfon is an associate in Lieff Cabraser’s New York office. Prior to joining Lieff Cabraser, Avery served as a Law Clerk to Judge Jane B. Stranch of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Prior to his clerkship, Avery worked as a Fellow at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, PLLC on litigation related to the opioid crisis, climate change, discrimination, human rights, and pension rights.

Avery graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude, where he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Law & Policy Review, a Team Leader for the Harvard Defenders, and a member of the Alien Tort Statute litigation team with Harvard’s International Human Rights Clinic. During law school Avery worked for Senator Charles E. Schumer on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, EarthRights International, and the New York State Attorney General’s Public Integrity Bureau.

Adam Gitlin

Adam is an associate in Lieff Cabraser’s San Francisco office specializing in antitrust litigation. He brings to bear his experience as a Trial Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, where he focused on merger review and potential anticompetitive conduct investigations and litigation, primarily in the healthcare industry. He was the Department’s lead attorney in U.S. v. Humana Inc. and Arcadian Management Services, Inc., and several nonpublic matters. He was an integral part of the U.S. and State of Texas v. United Regional Healthcare System team, which in 2011 was the first case the Department had filed in over a decade alleging monopoly conduct under Section 2 of the Sherman Act. He was also part of several “mega-merger” cases, including the trial team in the US Airways-American Airlines merger case, which settled on the eve of trial. He received multiple Assistant Attorney General Awards of Distinction for his work.

Before coming to Lieff Cabraser, Adam worked for the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, as Counsel in the Center’s Voting Rights & Elections Project. There he engaged in statewide legislative advocacy campaigns to pass voting reforms, successfully lobbied election officials in four states to issue new guidance on voter intimidation in advance of the 2016 general election, and educated and interacted with the public via white papersfrequent published articles with national syndication, and numerous press, conference, and media appearances.

Adam began his legal career as a judicial clerk to Judge Noël A. Kramer of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

John T. Nicolaou

John Nicolaou is a partner in Lieff Cabraser’s New York office, working on securities and consumer protection matters. Prior to joining the firm in 2017, John was an associate at Boies Schiller Flexner. While at Boies Schiller Flexner, John spent many years as a key member of the team representing a class of American International Group (AIG) shareholders in a case against the United States Government concerning the constitutionality of the Government’s acquisition of a controlling equity stake in AIG. He was a member of the trial team that won a liability verdict against the Government in the Court of Federal Claims.

John was a part of the team that successfully represented attorney Paul Napoli in an arbitration against his former partner Marc Bern regarding a multi-million dollar breach-of-contract claim. John was also a core member of the team that defended Pacific Investment Management Company LLC (PIMCO) against a billion dollar breach-of-contract and employment lawsuit by its former Chief Investment Officer, Bill Gross. His other cases at Boies Schiller Flexner included a variety of antitrust, fraud, and breach-of-contract matters.

Prior to joining Lieff Cabraser, Michelle was a Law Clerk to the Honorable Thelton E. Henderson of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Michelle earned her law degree from Stanford Law School. While there, Michelle was a Levin Center Public Interest Fellow, worked at the Stanford Community Law Clinic, served on the Executive Board of the Stanford Journal of Civil Rights & Civil Liberties, and was Co-President of Law Students for Reproductive Justice. Prior to attending law school, Michelle earned a bachelor of arts degree from Boston College.
