Santa Cruz Island MV Conception Dive Excursion Boat Fire Tragedy

In the early hours of Monday, September 2, 2019, the diving boat MV Conception caught fire and sank in a horrific tragedy off the coast of Santa Cruz Island near Santa Barbara, California. Five crew members, who had been awake and jumped overboard, survived the devastating fire. A sixth crew member who was asleep in the same area as the passengers is feared to be dead. The thirty-three other people who were on board lost their lives in the disaster. The overwhelming majority of the victims were from the San Francisco Bay Area; specific cause of the fire is not yet known.

The focus of our investigation will be on the failures that caused the fire and prevented those below deck from exiting safely. Initial inquiry has focused on the need for more than one exit: USA Today: California Dive-Boat Fire Highlights Need For More Than One Exit From Sleeping Quarters as well as LA Times: Lack of Escape Routes in California Boat Fire Becomes Focus as Investigation Intensifies
