Environmental Disaster At Dan River: Nation’s Third Largest Coal Ash Spill

Residents in North Carolina and Virginia have been affected by a massive spill of coal ash in the Dan River, making it the third largest coal ash spill in U.S. history according to the Waterkeeper Alliance. Since the disaster on February 9, 2014, people have been warned not to swim or fish in the contaminated river.
