Judge rules claims against Riddell Sports in National Football League Concussions Case can move forward

On September 27, 2019, U.S. District Court Judge Anita B. Brody named Lieff Cabraser and the Brad Sohn Law Firm as Lead Counsel for claims against helmet maker Riddell Sports Group Inc. The claims are part of the large nationwide multidistrict litigation continuing against the NFL over claims the football league should be held liable for the widespread and pervasive concussion-related injuries affecting multiple generations of professional football players. Judge Brody named Lieff Cabraser partner Wendy R. Fleishman to represent former players with claims against Riddell.

Ms. Fleishman noted that the Riddell cases before Judge Brody have been stayed pending upcoming decisions on dismissal motions, but that state court cases against Riddell have been moving forward. As noted by Law360, “Fleishman has been at the center of challenges to the settlement’s administration, representing Amon Gordon, a 37-year-old former NFL defensive end who was diagnosed with ‘severe’ dementia and is currently appealing the denial of his $1.5 million claim in the MDL.”
