As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, on January 26, 2021, a federal class action lawsuit was filed by Lieff Cabraser and Philadelphia firm Sauder Schelkopf against Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health, claiming that the nonprofit specializing in treating children with intellectual disabilities, mental disorders, and trauma was negligent and failed to protect at least six children from being sexually abused by staffers.
The complaint includes allegations of the rape and sexual abuse of inpatient clients as well as abuses committed by fellow inpatients that were ignored and/or suppressed by Devereux staff and management. Some patient plaintiffs claim their allegations were not only disregarded, but that they then received punishment for initiating complaints, including the withholding of food, physical restraint, isolation, and even physical abuse.
Some sexual abuse cases against Devereux have already gone to court, including one that led to a jury verdict for the plaintiff victim of $60 million. Widespread media attention has focused on the sexual abuse allegations against Devereux, including two in-depth investigations by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
