On August 4, 2026, CAL FIRE and the L.A. County Fire Department released their Origin and Cause Investigation Report and Supplemental Report on the Eaton Fire. The report conclusively determines that the Eaton Fire was caused by electrical arcing events on an out-of-service Edison transmission tower on the Mesa-Sylmar circuit. According to the report, these arcing events ejected hot metal particles from the southwest conductor paddle of the tower, which fell into the dry vegetation below and ignited the receptive fuel bed (i.e., dry brush), sparking the fire at approximately 6:11 p.m. on January 7, 2025. The finding is supported by extensive physical evidence, metallurgical and electrical engineering analysis, laboratory testing, and video evidence showing the arcing events and burning material falling from the tower into the vegetation, which ignited within seconds. The investigators also systematically excluded all other potential causes, including lightning, campfire, and arson.
