The Daily Journal has published its annual listing of Top Women Lawyers in California, which includes 12th-time selection for Lieff Cabraser partner Elizabeth J. Cabraser. The Top Women Lawyers award recognizes exemplary female attorney trailblazers and changemakers who are actively involved in cutting-edge work with the most influential impact across the legal field.

The publication highlights Elizabeth’s involvement in the National Prescription Opiate Litigation, where she serves on the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee, the Settlement Committee, and the Tribal Committee, representing municipalities, counties, other government entities and Native American tribes in the colossal lawsuit against manufacturers and distributors of opioids in response to the ongoing crisis of opioid addiction nationwide. Plaintiffs allege the makers of opioid pain medication overstated the drugs’ benefits and grossly misrepresented the risks of long-term use of those drugs, and that distributors failed to properly monitor suspicious orders of opiates, all of which contributed to the current opioid epidemic. Litigation is ongoing, with the first bellwether trial set for October before U.S. District Judge Dan Polster in Cleveland, Ohio.

As Elizabeth frames it, “this is the most complex case I have ever been involved in, because of the number of defendants, the length of time the opioid crisis was allowed to rage unabated, because it involves and implicates the health care industry, and because the remedies are going to take at least a generation to fully implement and take effect…This is a nationwide, public health emergency of unprecedented scale. It is responsible for reducing the national life expectancy by two years, according to public health experts.”

The publication also mentions Elizabeth’s pivotal work in The Exxon Valdez disaster, along with litigation on breast implants, Fen-Phen diet drugs, Vioxx, and the historic Holocaust human rights cases.
