We are delighted to announce that Lieff Cabraser’s in-house rock and roll band The R-23s have won the coveted “Best Lawyer Band in the Bay” award after winning big at the annual Family Violence Appellate Project’s June 20th Banding Together to End Domestic Violence fundraising event at The Chapel in San Francisco. Along with receiving first place and Best Band bragging rights, the R-23’s were able to account for $22,817 toward the event’s total contribution of $186,687 to help California survivors of domestic violence!
In FVAP’s annual Battle of the Bands fundraiser, bands made up of attorneys and employees from local law firms and corporate legal teams come together to compete on stage in 20-minute sets. The goals are to have a great time and to raise funds for FVAP, the only nonprofit organization in California dedicated to appealing cases on behalf of domestic violence survivors and their children for free. The Project represents low-income survivors when trial court decisions leave them or their children at risk of ongoing abuse. The fund raiser is held in both San Francisco and Los Angeles to support FVAP’s mission to keep domestic violence survivors safe and create legal precedents in favor of survivors throughout the state.
By partnering with pro bono attorneys from California’s top law firms and corporate legal teams, FVAP helps abuse survivors throughout California get the safety and justice they deserve by overturning 75% of the decisions we appeal — a success rate that is much higher than California’s 21% average for successful appeals.

About The R-23s
Lieff Cabraser’s R-23s previously won the Judge’s Choice Award at the Family Violence Appellate Project’s 2016 Battle of the Bands event, and won FVAP’s Best Lawyer Band in the Bay award in 2017. The band plays songs by The Clash, Otis Redding, Cream, and Chuck Berry, among others. The R-23s include Melissa Gardner on flute/vocals, Taylor Evans on vocals, Djuna Gray on bass, Elizabeth Cabraser on drums, Phong-Chau Nguyen on guitar/vocals, Anthony McDaniel on lead vocals, and Elizabeth Schneider on guitar.
