On December 20, 2019, U.S. District Judge William Orrick III of the Northern District of California issued an order naming Lieff Cabraser partner Sarah R. London as Co-Lead Counsel for plaintiffs in the nationwide multidistrict Juul e-cigarette fraud and injury litigation.
As reported by Law.com (subscription), in October, a diverse set of nearly 50 lawyers submitted proposals for case leadership structure with respect to the plaintiffs’ counsel. At the hearing, London encouraged the judge to choose a slate of 22 lawyers that included Lieff Cabraser alongside several other proposed co-lead counsel firms.
“We need a sizable group of lawyers who can work well together,” stated London, whose group had proposed that class action, personal injury cases, and municipal cases proceed together, rather than on separate tracks. London noted that plaintiffs needed to be able to adapt to developing circumstances. “We need be able to take our formation and direct it in the direction to get the job done,” she said.
As noted by Law.com, Juul is facing a large mix of personal injury and addiction cases as well as proposed class actions brought on behalf of consumers, school districts, and state and local governments, as well as cases seeking medical monitoring for Juul users in the future.
