The Daily Journal (subscription) has named Lieff Cabraser partner Elizabeth Cabraser to its inaugural listing of “Top Lawyers of the Decade,” recognized for her groundbreaking work on behalf of consumers during the last ten years. Elizabeth is one of 18 California lawyers selected to receive this prestigious recognition.

The article highlights Elizabeth’s career-long dedication to battling corporate greed and wrongdoing, deeming her, “[T]he Goliath fighting for the Davids.” “We try to leverage existing laws in favor of consumers,” Cabraser notes. “The power and the money and the influence are on the other side, and consumers aren’t an effective interest group without a law firm. That’s our slingshot.”

From there, the Journal focuses on Elizabeth’s involvement in the “massive mid-decade” VW “Clean Diesel” Emissions cases where she served as sole Lead Counsel and Chair of the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee, successfully securing nearly $15 billion in settlements for the benefit of consumers. The Volkswagen settlement was one of largest and most widely publicized class action settlements in United States history.

Elizabeth told the Journal, “I credit the government agencies we worked with to uncover the concealed threat of these environmental and consumer frauds. It took proactive federal agencies plus state regulators and private lawyers to attain these successes. In the Volkswagen settlement, we have seen a 95% participation rate, meaning consumers got these cars off the road. I was so impressed by that – it showed what economic incentives and messaging can do. Protecting consumer power to affect the marketplace is what we are about.”

Congratulations to Elizabeth on this wonderful recognition!
