Lieff Cabraser was proud to be a Hall of Fame Sponsor at the 2024 Banding Together to End Domestic Violence event, hosted at The Chapel in San Francisco on September 26. Our house band, The R-23s, performed at the annual battle-of-the-bands fundraiser, benefiting the Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP), which brings together attorney bands from Bay Area law firms to raise funds for domestic violence survivors.
To celebrate FVAP’s 12th anniversary, The R-23s took the stage once again, delivering an electrifying set of classic rock hits that had the crowd stomping. While we didn’t take home the coveted “Best Lawyer Band in the Bay” award this year, it was as always a tremendous honor to be part of such a meaningful event, supporting FVAP’s mission to provide free legal representation to low-income survivors of domestic violence.
About The Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP)
The Family Violence Appellate Project is transforming the power of the civil legal system and leveling the playing field for survivors of domestic violence. In many cases, survivors have also suffered financial abuse and cannot afford to appeal a trial court decision that puts them or their children in danger. At FVAP, we believe justice should be available to everyone, not just those who can afford it. We partner with pro bono attorneys from California’s top law firms and corporate legal teams to provide free, high-quality legal representation to survivors, giving them the best possible chance at success in their appeal. We win 74% of the affirmative appeals we bring to court on behalf of CA survivors — far above the statewide average of 20% — and 100% of appeals we defend.

Named the “Best Lawyer Band in the Bay” after playing their way to victory at the 2020, 2019 & 2017 Family Violence Appellate Project “Battle of the Bands,” Lieff Cabraser’s R-23s play songs by The Clash, Otis Redding, Cream, Chuck Berry, and more as modern day inheritors of the spirit of classic rock and roll. The R-23s feature Mark Chalos on keyboards, Melissa Gardner on flute/vocals, Anthony McDaniel on vocals, Phong-Chau Nguyen on guitar/vocals, Charles Gonzalez on bass, Lianna Harris on vocals, and Elizabeth Cabraser on drums.
