The Lieff Cabraser team led by partner Lexi J. Hazam was recognized as “Legal Lions of the Week” by Law360 (subscription) after achieving a key ruling in the Teen Social Media Addiction multidistrict litigation. On November 15, a California federal judge ruled that Meta Platforms and other social media companies must face the majority of public nuisance claims brought by school districts and local governments. These claims allege that the companies intentionally design their platforms to hook young users in a predatory manner that damages their mental health.
While claims under the laws of Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and South Carolina were dismissed, the court allowed claims under the laws of 15 other states to proceed. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found that these claims stayed within the boundaries of public nuisance laws.
The plaintiffs are represented by a Lieff Cabraser team headed by Personal Injury/Mass Tort practice group Chair Lexi J. Hazam and co-counsel from numerous other firms.
