A recent article in The Cut highlights how the Trump administration’s mass federal layoffs have disproportionately affected women — upending the lives of pregnant workers and those on maternity leave, with some losing jobs, benefits, and financial stability at critical times. The piece notes that many of the agencies hit hardest by reductions are majority-women workplaces, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Education, Health and Human Services, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Lieff Cabraser partner Jessica Moldovan, who represents plaintiffs in the Federal Employees DEI Termination litigation, notes that “in terms of people who have called us to seek representation, about 90 percent have been women or nonbinary. It’s a really astounding number.” In emphasizing the acute effects on pregnant and postpartum workers, the article raises serious questions about disparate impact and workplace protections.
