Shimano Bicycle Crankset Defect Investigation
Lieff Cabraser is investigating consumer complaints about crankset defects in bicycles and bicycle parts manufactured by Shimano North America. These cranksets, a critical part of a bicycle’s mechanical operation, can fail without warning, causing results for riders that can be catastrophic: the bike can no longer be pedaled, the pedals can separate from the bike, and the rider can easily fall off or lose control and crash.
While Shimano issued a recall in September of 2023, consumers allege the remedy included is totally inadequate. Under the remedy, consumers must bring their bikes to a Shimano dealer, where a mechanic will provide an on-the-spot rough eyeball estimate of the crankset join bond strength; only if a mechanic sees signs of “bonding separation or delamination” will Shimano offer to replace the crankset at its own cost. Given the inherent invisibility of crankset join defects prior to actual failure, many consumers will be forced to continue using a bike that poses a serious risk to their health and safety.
