Nationwide 2025 Student Athlete Privacy Breach Investigation
Indictment alleges intimate private, personal, financial, academic data of 150,000+ college athletes from more than 100 colleges was taken by a University of Michigan Football and former Baltimore professional football coach, exposed, and downloaded in a massive nine-year scheme
Lieff Cabraser’s Survivors’ Rights and Cybersecurity Teams are investigating reports of a serious scheme affecting 150,000-plus college athletes from over 100 different schools after a March 2025 indictment filed by the U.S. Attorney in Michigan brought details of the enormous breach to light.
The indictment states that between approximately 2015 and January 2023, the coach gained unauthorized access to student athlete databases of more than 100 colleges and universities that were maintained by a third-party vendor. After gaining access to these databases, he downloaded the personally identifiable information and medical data of more than 150,000 athletes. Then using information obtained from the student athlete databases and his own internet research, he was able to obtain access to the social media, email, and/or cloud storage accounts of more than 2,000 target athletes. The coach also allegedly illegally obtained access to the social media, email, and/or cloud storage accounts of more than 1,300 additional students and/or alumni from universities across the country, including intimate private photographs and videos.
