As reported by Courthouse News, a federal judge in San Francisco signaled she may extend an injunction blocking the Trump administration from terminating University of California research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, finding the DOE’s actions closely mirrored earlier grant cancellations she had already halted. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin said the DOE used the same form termination letters previously deemed unlawful when the government attempted to revoke billions in federal research funding across multiple agencies, calling the circumstances “basically identical” to prior cases.
The request was brought by the plaintiffs in the UC researcher class action litigation, which previously challenged the termination of federally funded research grants and now seeks to extend that relief to Department of Energy actions.
