Wright Medical Profemur Hip Replacement Injuries

The Profemur-Z modular hip system is a hip replacement device manufactured by Wright Medical Technology, Inc. Wright Medical marketed the Profemur-Z hip as being a more durable product than other artificial hip implants and one especially suited for persons with active lifestyles.

The Profemur-Z system consists of three separate components which are assembled together during surgery: a femoral head, a modular neck, and a femoral stem.

Prior to 2009, the design of the Profemur-Z hip system included a titanium modular neck adapter and stem. Over 10,000 patients across America received the Profemur Z with a titanium neck in hip replacement surgery.

Wright Profemur Injury Hip Revision Lawsuits

Lawsuits filed by patients against Wright Medical charged that the titanium Profemur hip was defective and that patients experienced Wright hip injuries. Rather than functioning in the intended manner, as alleged in the complaints, the titanium Profemur-Z modular neck was prone to fretting, degradation, and fracture.

Hip implant x-ray photoProfemur patient revision lawsuits further charged that Wright Medical knew or should have known that the Profemur-Z modular neck was not safe for the patients, yet continued to market and sell the product. The medical device has an unacceptable failure rate — approximately 11.2% after only three years following implantation, according to the Australian National Joint Registry.

Even as early as 2000, when Wright Medical started to market the Profemur with a titanium neck, the company was allegedly aware that its titanium components would present an unreasonably high risk of fracture and failure, particularly in physically active and/or heavier persons.

Legal Rights of those Injured by Wright Profemur Hip Implants

The law in most states provides individuals with legal claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result of a medical device that is defective or fails to perform as advertised.

Patients may file a personal injury lawsuit seeking compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses including the cost of replacement surgery, lost past and future wages and punitive damages.
