Lieff Cabraser is investigating consumer reports of severe burn injuries arising from the use of portable countertop ranges and portable butane camping stoves. These portable stoves and ranges can blow up (explode) and otherwise malfunction in ways that cause extreme burn injuries and even death. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) have noted that portable camping stoves continue to cause burns to consumers. Similarly, the National Fire Protection Association produced a 2013 report on home fires involving heating equipment, and noted that as recently as 2011, heating equipment was involved in an estimated 53,600 reported home structure fires, 400 civilian deaths, 1,520 civilian injuries and nearly $1 billion in property damage. For the period 2007-2011, the Association noted that 81% of home heating fire deaths and 70% of such injuries involved portable heaters.
