This attack was successful despite CHS’s having implemented a new data security program as part of a settlement with customers over an earlier 2014 data breach that affected over 6 million of its customers.

According to statements given by CHS to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a hacker was able to access not just the personal information, but also the health records of about one million of its patients. The data breach occurred within the systems of a cybersecurity company that provides CHS with data transfer software.
