Liberty University Sexual Assaults Investigation

Lieff Cabraser is investigating disturbing reports relating to Liberty University’s suppression of sexual assault complaints. In addition to strongly urging students to not-report rape, victims were allegedly further threatened with expulsion if the circumstances around a given assault included any overlap with the school’s prohibition against drinking and fraternizing with the opposite sex.

In other words, victims allege that any lapse in violating Liberty University’s rules prohibiting drinking and fraternizing effectively invalidates any subsequent rape claim. This essentially amounts to a “it’s the victim’s fault” approach that is itself abusive, categorically misdirected, and likely illegal in the face of the school’s annual federal student aid funds of nearly $800 million.

The school, founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell, ignored reports of rape and threatened to punish accusers for related instances of breaking its moral code, say former students. An official who was fired for raising concerns at Liberty University calls it a “conspiracy of silence.”

Sexual assault is never acceptible under any conditions, and blaming the victim and suppressing their assault is itself criminal. Lieff Cabraser’s award-winning sexual assault survivors legal team is dedicated to bringing justice to all victims of sexual assault, including at Liberty University.
