Mark Chalos Speaks on Claims Issues in Opiate Crisis Lawsuits at HarrisMartin Opioid MDL Conference

Lieff Cabraser partner Mark P. Chalos will participate in a panel discussion at the HarrisMartin’s Plaintiff Opioid MDL Conference next week at the Westin Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio. Mark will speak on Monday January 8th on “Third-Party Payor, Class, and Hospital Claims” as they relate to the ongoing national opioid crisis. In December 2017, Mark and the Lieff Cabraser attorney team filed actions in Tennessee federal courts on behalf of both the city of Nashville and the government of Smith County in Middle Tennessee. Prescription opioid drugs are estimated to kill upwards of 100 Americans per day — over 36,000 Americans per year. The cases seek to hold opioid manufacturers and distributors liable for their part in creating and fostering the crisis. [Read more…]

Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP partners Rachel Geman and Elizabeth J. Cabraser, with co-counsel, have filed a multi-state class action lawsuit in Indiana federal court alleging that HCC Medical Insurance Services, LLC, HCC Life Insurance Company, and Health Insurance Innovations, Inc. (“Defendants”) have cheated the plaintiffs—consumers of short-term insurance plans who have incurred sometimes catastrophic medical expenses—by routinely and systematically refusing to pay promised insurance benefits, including through the common vehicle of post-claims underwriting. California Federal Judge Rules DIRECTV Cannot Avoid Robocall Lawsuit

A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report reveals that consumer complaints about harassing unwanted automated telemarketing calls jumped significantly in 2017, and have quadrupled since 2009. There were a total of 4.5 million robocall complaints last year, and the agency received an additional 2.5 million complaints about live telemarketing calls; on average, the FTC received over 375,000 per month. New Legal Defense Fund Created To Combat Sexual Harassment

300 prominent actresses, female agents, writers, directors, producers, and entertainment executives have joined forces to fight systemic sexual harassment in Hollywood and beyond in blue-collar workplaces across the nation. The new initiative, called Time’s Up, includes funding for legal representation which will be coordinated and administered by the National Women’s Law Center’s Legal Network for Gender Equity.
